We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Victoria.

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

This was a very informative event. I learnt the value of longer shutter speeds and other settings. Therew as an opportunity to be guided on composition and the freedom to also discover your own. As always Ron was helpful and patient.

As usual this was a pleasure. Ron provided lots of practical advice, talked about influential photographers, pointed out great angles to take shots, and showed us a historical photograph on signage . I had sufficient individual time.

I really like the opportunity to meet up with some like minded people. As well as having the knowledge of an experienced photographer along to be able to ask questions of. Ron was friendly, easy going and a wealth of knowledge. I look forward to attending more of these meet ups.

Extremely informed, I was able to get off of the auto mode. I'm green as the grass grows. I love nature and all it's wonders, so being able to finally take a picture in the shades and actually be able to see the picture I see is a huge step in the right direction. So thank for that. Looking forward to more classes. Highly recommend to anyone starting to become a photographer or just a hobby.

A great introduction to black and white photography. All new learning which has given me a better appreciation of how black and white photographs work. Useful suggestions on which colours work well in b&w photographs. The group was a nice mix of less experienced and more experienced photographers. Ron does take time to attend to each person in the group individually so no one feels that have not had some learning of particular value to them.

I enjoyed hearing about the Exposure Triangle and how the different "sides" of the triangle affect the others. Some useful advice on shooting birds in flight. It was also very helpful for Ron to give camera -specific teachings for each participant,

Title or Location: Beacon Hill Park in Victoria BC
I'd been at Beacon Hill Park?s Famous Story Pole a number of times and noticed that some of the Eagles would land on top of it to survey the park from. Realizing it was a golden opportunity, I brought my camera gear (Sony A7iv and a Sigma 150-600mm lens) and just waited for some magic to happen. And happen it did...

I had a vision for this shot when I saw the bench had been trying to get this shot for a couple weeks but the light wasn?t right when I tried. I got my mom and my dog to sit together. It took a few tries to get the dog to look at her but eventually she did.

Title or Location: Juneau Alaska, Communications Tower
This image was taken with a converted (560nm) Nikon D3400, with a 850nm filter installed on a 30mm fixed lens. I like that my placement allowed full tower height both above and below the water line. I enjoy infrared monochrome photography, both the contrast in the images and the juxtaposition of blacks and whites.

Title or Location: The Ogden Point Breakwater in Victoria, BC
The rain had just stopped and waves of fog started rolling through so I grabbed my medium format film camera loaded with Ilford HP5 (ISO 400) and headed out. Missed the fog, but captured some long shadows and crepuscular rays thanks to the setting sun and clearing clouds. This was shot on a Hasselblad SWC/M so 38mm fixed lens (22mm ff equivalent) at f16, 1/125sec with a red filter to darken the very bright sky. Home developed in Flicfilm Black, White and Green. Scanned into Lightroom with a Fuj

I made this on medium format black and white film. My old film camera has a waist-level view finder. I held the camera away from me, pointed straight down towards the crowds below with the viewfinder straight ahead for easy composition. I love long shadows.

During my "Northern Nights" workshop up at Blachford Lake Lodge, I took a moment from teaching to snap this self-portrait while the aurora show started up overhead. Unfortunately for me, this lodge I've been going to since I was a kid went bankrupt this year, and I'm currently on the hunt for a new venue so I can keep sharing the love of the lights and the North, my home, with people all over the world.

Title or Location: Crane Park, Whitton.
Taken with Nikon D7500 with 300mm Nikkor lens. Two male Kingfishers possibly adult male and offspring sitting low by the River Crane. Light was low so had to use a high ISO. Because of this the image had to be denoised . It was then cropped and clarity and texture added in Lightroom. I have a nice triptych of them sitting in three different poses.

This image was created at Fossil Falls in the Mojave Desert California. The location was selected a few months before during a site selection trip to the desert.
